Manufacturer's code (when applicable) [1]. From 1935 onwards, Heimsoeth und Rinke (H&R) was themain contractor, which succeeded the original manufacturerChiffriermaschinen AG (ChiMaAG). However, H&Rdid not manufacture any machines itself. Instead, the machines were madeby Konski & Krüger (K&K) elsewhere in Berlin. From 1941 onwards, these machines were marked with jla — themanufacturer code assigned to H&R.In 1944, K&K outsourced the production of 300 Enigma M4 machinesto a another firm by the name of Geyer. These machines carried the manufacturer code gvxthat was assigned to K&K.All early naval machines (M1, M2 and M3) were made by K&Kon behalf of H&R [4].Between 1942 and 1945, Ertel Werk in München — code bac— produced 3360 Enigma I machines on a separate serial number rangesuffixed with the letter 'E' (e.g. A01262/bac/44E).In addition, typewriter manufacturer Olympia in Erfurt made3450 Enigma M4 machines from 1943 to 1945.Olympia (code aye) used its own number range from M15001 to M18450 (e.g. M18340/aye/45).Atlas Werke (code) jmz did not make any Enigma machines, but is thought have made sub-parts. There appears to be a recurring debate about the number of steckered (military)Enigma machines that have been manufactured. In publications, the productionfigures vary between 20,000 and 100,000. In reality the answer lies somewherein between. In 2021, historian Frode Weierud made anaccurate estimationbased on orders and production reports from the German archives [4].The tables below show the production quantities of the various models, as faras they are known. As there are no production figures of most of the commercialmachines and the early printing Enigma machines, we have made an educated guessbased on the serial numbers of surviving machines.Note that the 3-letter manufacturer codes were introduced between 1940and 1941.
